BEE Kind Hoop Art

by Katie Berry

Earth Day is coming up this month, so I’ve decided to create this adorable BEE kind hoop art. Did you know that bees are hard workers and they help our ecosystem?  Did you know that some bees are becoming extinct?   Well, we need to not only be kind to one another but we need to be kind to the bees too.   Bees make the honey we eat and the Berry family sure goes through a lot of it!

Materials:

  • 9”x12” Craft Cut of Kunin Premium Felt:  (1) Yellow
  • 9”x12” Craft Cut of Kunin Classic Felt:  (1) Black, (1) White, (1) Silver Grey
  • Embroidery Hoop
  • Embroidery Floss
  • Embroidery Needle
  • Beacon Glue
  • Scissors
  • Bee PDF (downloadable below)
  • Pen

How I made it:

Step 1:

Open the embroidery hoop, place the silver grey felt over the inner hoop and then return the outer hoop over the inner hoop.   After the felt is snug and you’ve screwed the screw tight, trim the excess felt from the back.

Step 2:

Cut out the pattern for the bee and then cut the felt using the pattern, 2 sets of wing pieces, 2 body pieces, and one head piece.  I cut 2 pieces for each wing to make them a little thicker.   The yellow body piece is to cut the stripes from.  Also, cut two small strips for the antennas. Place your unglued bee on the hoop and decide where you’d like your letters to be.  Using a pen write the words BEE kind where you’d like them.

Step 3:

Using an embroidery needle and floss, do a basic stitch over your pen marks.  The dot for the “I” is a French knot.

Step 4:

Using glue, glue the pieces of your bee together and glue it to the silver grey felt that is in the hoop.

Now it’s ready to hang up to let everyone know to BEE kind!

I recently found out that you can adopt a beehive at my local plant nursery.   What a great idea!  You can even decorate the hive before the bees make a home of it!   They have bee keepers that come in to take care of the beehives and you also get roughly 10lbs of the honey that is harvested from your hive!   How cool is that?!

I hope you like this BEE kind hoop art.   Visiting the plant nursery and seeing the hives inspired me to create this kind piece of art.

You can now find an expanded color line of Kunin® ClassicfeltKunin® Premiumfelt and Corduroy non-wovens fabrics in cut by the yard at your local Walmart; please inquire as to what is available in your area.

Happy Crafting,
