April has arrived and on the 22st we will be celebrating Earth Day. Since Kunin Felt is made from 100% recycled plastic bottles, all month long the Design Team will be sharing earth-friendly upcycled projects!
I always have a ton of felt scraps leftover after I complete a project, but I cannot throw them away, so I always save them. The small bits are the most challenging but upcycled felt scrap flowers are the perfect project to reuse and repurpose what others might consider trash.
Here’s What You Will Need:
- Kunin Classics™ Felt 9” x 12” Craft Cuts – A Variety of Colors
- Buttons, Vintage; Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks; Scissors; Paper Piercer; Wire Stems, 22 Gauge; Wire Cutters; Ruler; Upcycled Containers to use as Vases; Ribbon, green gingham; Wooden Beads for Vase filler
Here’s How to Make it:
Step One:
Hand cut small, medium and large circles, as well as leaf shapes from a variety of colors of Kunin Classics™ Felt. I did not use a pattern for the circles or the leaves, I just started cutting!
Step Two:
Select buttons and then layer with a small, medium and large circle in coordinating color sets.
Step Three:
Bend wire stem 3” from one end to form a “U” at the end. Use paper piercer to create two holes through all three layers of stacked felt circles.
Place shank buttons directly onto wire stem, then thread each end through the holes in the felt. Gather wire tightly from underneath the felt, then twist to secure. For flat buttons with 2 or 4 holes, place a bead on the wire first to camouflage the holes.
Step Four:
Attach a leaf to each flower with hot glue at the base of the twisted wire. Fold the point of the leaf in half over the wire as the glue cools.
Step Five:
Select a container to display the flowers, mine are upcycled spice and salad dressing jars! Finish the jars with a bow of green gingham ribbon!
I hope you will use my Upcycled Felt Scrap Flowers as a jumping off point to showcase your Kunin Creativity and create something to celebrate Earth Day! I can’t wait to display these flowers on my Spring Mantel. A bouquet of these felt flowers would make a great gift!
Felt is an easy, versatile and forgiving medium which allows you to create affordable but trendy projects whether you are a beginner or an expert crafter!
You can now find an expanded color line of Kunin® Classicfelt; Kunin® Premiumfelt and Corduroy non-wovens fabrics in cut by the yard at your local Walmart; please inquire as to what is available in your area.
Did you know Kunin felt is made from recycled plastic water bottles and manufactured right here in the US? It takes approximately ten plastic bottles to make a pound of fibers. That is used to create many products, my favorite of course is Kunin felt!
