How to Make A Felt Axolotl Stuffed Toy

Have you seen all of the cute Axolotl stuffies and softies. My girls are obsessed! So here you go, how to make a felt Axolotl stuffed toy! To make it even more fun I made a cute coral sleeping bag. Did you know Axolotls can live twelve to fifteen years, a member of the salamander family, and regrow any part of their body.

Let’s get started making this felt Axolotl stuffed toy. I used a sewing machine but you can hand sew or even completely glue this toy as well.

Skill Level: Beginner
Time: 2 Hours
Size: 9″ Length

You Will Need:

STEP 1

Print out pattern. Draw around pieces as shown.
TIP: To make sewing of small pieces easier. Cut two layers slightly larger than pattern pieces. Draw 1/4″ outside of pattern lines.

STEP 2

Cut around the top layer of the body just inside the drawn pattern line. Insert top legs into sides as marked on pattern.

STEP 3

Sew around body completely leaving opening at top. Cut away the excess bottom layer carefully just outside stitch line. Fold over top legs and continue cutting. Leave excess along top opening.

STEP 4

Cut two tail layers from pattern making one 1/4″ larger than the other. Use scallop scissors or just cut along lines of pattern. Glue the smaller one then the larger tail piece over top.

STEP 5

Insert safety eyes into head where marked. If using other options for eyes omit this step.

STEP 6

Insert three head fins into either side of head as marked on pattern. Extend center one slightly. Pin in place.

STEP 7

Sew around head leaving opening at bottom.

STEP 8

Carefully trim around head folding fins forward as you cut.

STEP 9

Glue the bottom legs to front. Let dry. Stuff both the head and body pieces.

STEP 10

Insert body into head, pushing the excess top of body inside. Pin. Start at back of neck and overcast stitch into place. Adjust front if needed as you go.

STEP 11

Draw a cute smile with a pencil as shown on pattern.

STEP 12

With embroidery needle and floss back stitch a smile. I did two layers.

STEP 13

Use the dimensional paint to make eye dots. Let dry. There you have it! How to make a felt Axolotl stuffed toy. (Not recommended for children under three)
