Good Morning Kunin fans, Beth here on the blog today to share my Faux Wood Home is where the Heart is banner. Now, I am not a wood worker, but I love all of the weathered wood projects that I see online, so I decided to see if I could recreate the look of chippy painted weathered wood with Kunin Felt and SCORE! After a few failed attempts, I found the color formula and technique that worked! I am excited to share it with you today.
Here’s What You Will Need:
- Kunin® Classicfelt™ 9” x 12” Craft Cuts – Baby Blue, Aqua, Cadet Blue, Royal Blue, Brilliant Blue, Lagoon, Peacock, Neon Blue, Ocean Blue and Red (1 of each)
- Kunin® Premiumfelt™ By the Yard – Sandstone 1 yard
- Beacon Adhesives Felt Glue
- Tombow Dual Brush Pen # 977 Saddle Brown and MONOTWIN Permanent Marker
- Americana Paints by DecoArt – Titanium White
- Patterns – United States and Heart
- Straight Scissors; Ruler; Pencil; Paintbrush; Wooden Dowel 25”; Turquoise Cotton Twill Tape Ribbon 36”;
Here’s How To Make It
Step One:
Cut two rectangles from yard of Sandstone Felt. The first 12” by 18” and the second 16” by 23”, set aside. Download, print and cut out United States and Heart patterns. Flip pattern over and trace with permanent marker (backwards) on 12” by 18” rectangle of Sandstone Felt. Cut out with Straight scissors.
TIP: Tracing patterns backwards allows any trace lines to remain on the back of your finished project.
Step Two:
Draw 2” wide lines on US Map with Saddle Brown marker. Make some of the sections of the lines darker and some lighter. Using a large stiff bristle paintbrush, apply white craft paint with a dry brush technique in a random manner. Paint up to the brown lines, but do not overlap. Apply more paint in some areas and less paint in others to mimic painted weathered wood.
Step Three:
Measure and cut nine rectangles 4” by 7”. One from each Baby Blue, Aqua, Cadet Blue, Royal Blue, Brilliant Blue, Lagoon, Peacock, Neon Blue and Ocean Blue Felt. Measure in 1” from the left, right and bottom edges of the 16” by 23” Sandstone Felt rectangle, then apply the nine blue rectangles with Beacon Felt Glue. Leave the extra 3” at the top of the banner.
Step Four:
Darken edges around patchwork blue rectangle with Saddle Brown marker, making some areas darker and some areas lighter. Dry brush the weathered wood technique on the exposed edges of the Sandstone Felt. Apply more paint in some areas and less paint in others to mimic painted weathered wood.
Step Five:
Trace and cut Heart pattern from Red Felt. Apply to YOUR home city and state with Felt Glue. Cut wooden dowel to 25” and color 2” at each end with Saddle Brown marker. Flip banner over, create a pocket along the top edge by folding over in half and securing with hot glue. Insert dowel. Tie turquoise twill tape in a knot at each end of dowel to create a hanger.
