Garden Blossom Doll Dress

DQ McKayla Garden Dress

We have been having fun this summer with Camp Doll Diaries. (www.dolldiaries.com) I was sent this very pretty McKayla, from the Madame Alexander collection and have been busy putting her a wardrobe together. With all of the print and pattern felt to choose from what a creative and  fun time indeed!

I also wanted to design felt fashions that were fast and easy for any age of doll lover. I have discovered that the 9″ x 12″ craft cuts of felt fit around 18″ dolls like McKayla perfectly! Even less measuring or cutting. So let’s get started making this cute flower dress. Of course it is all about the accessories too, flip flops and flower head band complete her outfit.

1. From the floral felt cut one 1/2″ x 9″ flip flop band, 1″ x 12″  headband, 2″ x 12″ waistband and two 4″ x 9″ dress straps.

2. Fold both the green (overskirt) and pink (underskirt) felt in half lengthwise. Measure 1″ from top of green and draw line. Measure 3″ from top of pink and draw line.

3. Cutting through folded edge, make 1″ wide cuts to marked lines on both pieces of felt. Fold felt pieces so pencil lines are now on the inside. Glue open ends closed.

4. Fold strap pieces in half wrong sides out. Draw line 1/2″ from open ends. Cut 1/2″ slits along entire piece through folded end. Repeat for second strap. Fold straps with right sides out. Glue open edges closed.

5. Measure 1″ from top of green overskirt. Place pink underskirt along this line. Glue in place.

6. Glue floral waistband piece to top edge of green on wrong side. Fold piece over top and glue down 1″ along front.

7. To finish the dress, overlap straps at center front of dress and glue in place. Cut 1/2″ wide pieces of hook and loop and glue a piece to ends of dress at waistband shoulder straps. Place an additional piece of hook and loop at top of dress waistband on right side and end of strap.

8. To make flower cut a 2″ by 12″ piece of orange felt. Fold in half lengthwise. Make small slits through fold. Roll and glue from one end to create flower. Glue to center front where the straps meet on dress.

9. For the hairband repeat Step 8 for flower.

10. Flipflops were made by drawing around a pair of doll slippers. Cut four from felt. Measure around doll’s foot. Cut two strap pieces. Glue straps in between felt layers. Add buttons.

A complete outfit, an hour to make so cute, quick and affordable! Three little grand daughters and working with Doll Diaries, I now can play dolls as much as I want!
